Melanie and Antonio ‘fell out of love’

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas “drifted apart a long time ago”.

The couple announced on Friday that they were ending their marriage of 18 years after Melanie filed for divorce.

Despite the relationship ending, there was apparently no infidelity or bad feelings on either side.

"There was no cheating on either side," a source told Us Weekly. "They had fallen out of love awhile ago."

Although the couple were said to have drifted apart long ago, they tried to stay together. Both Antonio and Melanie were reportedly making an effort for the sake of their family.

"Their daughter Stella is about to be 18 in September and they wanted to wait until [the] kids were grown and out of the house before they split up, but knew they would awhile ago," the source added. "They stayed together for the sake of the kids."

Documents obtained by TMZ show the Working Girl star wants sole physical and joint legal custody of their 17-year-old daughter. She is also seeing seeking child support from Antonio.

"They are committed to making the divorce go through easily and swiftly for the sake of everyone," the source said.

Melanie and Antonio released a joint statement on Friday confirming news of the split and insisting they would still be friends. According to the couple, their break up would be handled with mutual respect.

“We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalise our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honouring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together,” a spokesman for the couple announced.
