Melanie Griffith ‘suspicious of Antonio’

Melanie Griffith's trust issues played a big part in her marriage breakdown, according to reports.

The acting couple announced their divorce on June 6 after 18 years of marriage. Since then, speculation has mounted as to what drove them apart and a source now claims it was Melanie's distrust of her husband's relationships with other women that led to the split.

"Mel had trust issues and was always suspicious of Antonio's friendships with other women," the insider told British magazine Closer. "Mel's told pals Antonio was constantly surrounded by beautiful co-stars. In the end, it proved too much to handle, but they're still on good terms for [daughter] Stella's sake."

The Working Girl actress met the 53-year-old while filming their 1995 comedy movie Too Much and have 17-year-old daughter Stella together. In recent months reports kept surfacing that the couple had fallen out of love with each other, but they always refuted them. But the source claims Antonio and his 56-year-old spouse had temporarily parted on numerous occasions in recent years.

"Mel and Antonio had already gone through four trial separations in the past six years," they added to the publication.

People magazine also reported the numerous separations and that eventually they just took their toll on the couple. That paired with time apart because of work commitments meant they started to lead separate lives.

"The split is not something new and out of the blue, they have had issues for years," the source told People. “The fights and separations got to be too much. He has always led an international life and during the times they were apart for business or film work, he began to live his own life away from her."
