Melissa's spy gets a second try

Melissa George will return as spy Sam Hunter, despite the BBC axing drama Hunted after just one series.

The former Home And Away star played an operative for an elite private intelligence firm in the suspense thriller set in the world of international espionage which launched on the BBC last October.

But the BBC - which co-produced Hunted with the HBO-owned US cable channel Cinemax - announced it was not renewing the show for a second series in November.

Now Broadcast has reported that Cinemax has commissioned a four-part spin-off show Sam Hunter, which will follow Melissa's character as she goes on the run from her former spy colleagues and attempts to protect her daughter.

Sam got pregnant by her fellow spy Aidan, played by Adam Rayner, but kept her child a secret after she was shot and believed Aidan had betrayed her.

The X Files' Frank Spotnitz, who wrote Hunted, will write the spin-off, which is expected to be grittier than the original, as it will air on a premium cable channel.
