Ryan Gosling reportedly credits Eva Mendes with helping him find the confidence to direct.

The Hollywood stars met on the set of 2012 movie The Place Beyond the Pines and she appears in his upcoming directorial debut How to Catch a Monster.

There was speculation the pair had split last year, with further reports they were no longer together last month. Eva laughed off the gossip during a US TV appearance and it's now claimed Ryan, 33, begged her to give things another go.

"Ever since they broke up, Ryan's been pleading with Eva to take him back," an insider told British magazine Heat.

"He was a wreck without her - she's his muse and the only woman alive who could give him the courage to try directing. They're good for each other and a great match. He knows it and he's not going to let her get away this time."

It was apparently Eva, 40, who initially ended things, after becoming concerned about where the relationship was going.

"Eva gave Ryan a marriage ultimatum last October and, when he failed to produce a ring, she walked out on him," the source claimed.

It's thought an engagement is now on the cards, with confirmation expected within the next couple of months.

Last month, the actress joked about the constant speculation about her relationship while on Ellen DeGeneres' show. Ryan is famed for his portrayal of the romantic lead Noah in 2004's The Notebook, which Eva referenced when quizzed on her Valentine's Day plans.

"I'm not a big Valentine's Day person. I'll probably just order a deep dish [pizza] and watch The Notebook or something," she laughed. "Just cry, and weep!"
