Michael Caine says the secret to a successful marriage is turning your relationship into a business partnership - and having separate bathrooms.

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Michael Caine's marriage works because his wife answers his emails for him.

The 82-year-old Hollywood heavyweight has been married to Shakira since 1973, after ending his first union with actress Patricia Haines 11 years earlier.

It's not easy to maintain a relationship in the spotlight, but Michael believes he's found a formula that works: mixing business with pleasure.

"It's not just a partnership built on love; it's also a business partnership," he told Germany's Reader's Digest, adding she handles most of the management side of his career. "I'll only answer the phone in an emergency. And unlike her, I wouldn't even know how to answer an email!"

The Brit also has another top tip: always splash the cash on an extra bathroom.

It certainly seems to be working for the two-time Oscar winner, who has daughters Natasha with Shakira and Dominique with Patricia. Even his busy career could never harm his bond with his family, with the star adding his wife and children would travel with him and enjoy the variety it gave to their lives.

"It's also very helpful when you marry the most beautiful woman you've ever seen in your life - that's true for me even today," the proud actor smiled.

But not all is rosy right now - Michael admits that getting older can be a pain, especially when he wakes up and something's aching "yet again".

Ageing is something his latest film, Going in Style addresses. In the comedy, a remake of the 1979 original, three retirees decide to plan a bank heist. The feature is directed by Scrubs star Zach Braff and also stars Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin.

It's due for release next year (16).
