Michelle Williams thought Shia LaBeouf was "the best audience member we ever had" when he was arrested for disorderly conduct as he watched her in Cabaret.

Michelle Williams thought she was "on fire" in Cabaret on the night that Shia LaBeouf was arrested for disorderly conduct at the show.

The 29-year-old actor was in the audience back in June 2014 when Michelle, 35, was starring as Sally Bowles in the Broadway show at the Studio 54 theatre.

Police were called during the intermission and the actor was escorted out in handcuffs and arrested amid allegations of violent behaviour and obscene language. He was subsequently charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

But one person who wasn't offended by Shia's behaviour was Michelle.

"I gotta tell you the truth about that night. I thought he was the best audience member we ever had," she said during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night (25Apr16). "I didn’t know it was him. Oh, he was wonderful, he was wonderful. He was so excited, he was so effusive with his applause and his shouting and cheering."

In fact, Shia's enthusiastic response at the show made Michelle believe she was giving the performance of her life.

"I didn’t know he was at the show and when I came off stage people said to me, ‘Do you know what’s going on?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I’m nailing it, they love me, I mean, I’m on fire tonight!’ And they said, ‘No….’ " Michelle laughed.

"He would start cheering for me before I even opened my mouth to sing. I mean, can you imagine the disappointment every night not having Shia LaBeouf in the audience?"

Now Michelle is starring in another Broadway show, Blackbird, alongside The Newsroom star Jeff Daniels. And there's one person she's hoping to see as she gazes out into the audience.

"I would love for Shia to come back and see this show," Michelle admitted.

Blackbird runs at Belasco Theatre in New York until 11 June (16).
