Miller: I usually sing when I’m drunk!
Sienna Miller has never sung or danced in public “unless mildly intoxicated”.
The British actress is due to take over from Emma Stone in the Broadway production of Cabaret in a matter of weeks. But the 33-year-old admitted that her foray into public singing has always involved some kind of liquor until now.
“It’s karaoke and vodka fuelled!” she laughed to Matt Lauer during an appearance on the Today show. “I’ve never publicly sung or danced unless mildly intoxicated so this is going to be an interesting experiment.”
Sienna will take on the role of Sally Bowles, made famous by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film, for the production She hopes that the fact that the character isn’t supposed to be the greatest singer will work in her favour.
“I’m really underselling it. They’ve heard me sing, and Sally Bowles – the original play is based on a book by Christopher Isherwood – and the real Sally Bowles, who was a real woman, was supposed to be rough around the edges,” she explained. “Not the Liza version. She’s supposed to be not great, and that’s the truth. So I’m doing that version.”
Sienna’s first night will be on February 17. And the American Sniper actress couldn’t hide her nerves when quizzed by the show’s host.
“I’m terrified, of course I am,” she said. “By the way, if I wasn’t, I’d be really worried because it’s singing and dancing on Broadway. This is a big deal.”
It’s a big year for the mother-of-one. As well as her stage appearance and role in American Sniper alongside Bradley Cooper, she is also starring in another critically-acclaimed drama, Foxcatcher alongside Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and Steve Carell.
