Benedict Cumberbatch hopes Sherlock will continue into the future

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch said he would like the cult crime series to continue into the future.

Benedict is currently filming the third series of three episodes in the modern-day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Victorian crime novels.

He said that the future of the BBC One series, in which he plays the dysfunctional anti-hero title role, depended on the availability of himself, The Hobbit star Martin Freeman, who plays Dr John Watson, and the show's writer, Dr Who supremo Steven Moffat.

"We love doing it as we are doing it at the moment in the format we are doing it," he said.

"I'd love to keep it going for as long as possible, I think we all would."

Asked whether he saw Freeman often, he added: "When we can but it has been a bit crazy. He's been away from home and his two small children and (wife) Amanda (Abbington) for a long, long part of the last two years.

"That is a very precious commodity when he gets time to get back home."

The latest episodes of Sherlock are likely to be screened around Christmas, he added.

Benedict, who also stars in the forthcoming JJ Abrams Star Trek film, was at the South Bank Sky Arts Award to see Parade's End, the BBC Two period drama in which he starred, pick up the award for television drama.
