Nicole Kidman: I was team Marilyn
Nicole Kidman was always a big Marilyn Monroe fan.
The Australian actress takes on the lead role in Grace of Monaco, which will open this year's Cannes Film Festival. Despite portraying the late Hollywood legend, the 46-year-old admits it was blonde star Marilyn that impressed her as a child.
"At that time, the key question was: 'Who do you prefer - Grace Kelly or Marilyn Monroe?'" she smiled to German magazine Für Sie. "I have to confess, Marilyn was my favourite back then. But not anymore!"
While Nicole might have been team Marilyn, her mom was a big fan of Grace's.
"My mother even knew the length of Grace Kelly's calves: 54 centimetres!" she laughed. "I had only seen the films she'd made with Alfred Hitchcock and didn't know much about her life. That changed as I prepared for this role."
The film has been criticised by Grace's children, Prince Albert and his sisters, Princesses Caroline and Stephanie. The royals claimed the movie was based on "erroneous and dubious historical references".
However, Nicole can understand why they feel the way they do.
"I know they’re upset. I would be, too, if it were my mother," she reasoned to the MailOnline.
"It’s a child’s job to protect their parent. In that regard, I get it. I get why the children are upset.
"I can’t say much other than that I have great respect and regard for their mother.
"It’s not meant to be a biopic. I certainly did my best to honour everything that was real and truthful in it. I just took a back seat on the whole thing. My job in this is to be one of the actors in the film."
Grace of Monaco focuses on the star's marriage to Rainier III, Prince of Monaco and her crisis of identity.
