Dermot O'Leary has admitted he's not a fan of shows like The Only Way Is Essex.

The X Factor presenter and National Television Awards host said that TV is in a golden age and that he and his TV producer wife Dee Koppang love to hunker down on the sofa with a good series.

But he admitted he's not a fan of structured reality formats like TOWIE or Made In Chelsea, saying: "The Essexes and the Chelseas have never really done it for me."

Dermot, 39, said: "You always crave what you don't have, so, although I work in entertainment, I end up watching drama at home.

"Big shows for us are The Walking Dead, The Hour, Homeland, Downton Abbey, and we love stuff like The Shadow Line."

The presenter defended the last series of The X Factor, which was hit by falling ratings.

"Unfortunately we got a hammering in the press because it didn't rate as well as some shows before but that's a lazy stick to beat the show with," he said.

"I thought it was one of our best series so far, and with James Arthur we've got a winner who can actually go and do something."

:: The National Television Awards are on ITV1 on Wednesday, January 23.
