Olivia Williams has said she thinks Dame Helen Mirren has made playing a detective a "rite of passage" for all actresses.
The 42-year-old actress has landed the lead role in Case Sensitive, a one-off drama on ITV1 adapted from crime writer Sophie Hannah's book The Point Of Rescue.
The Dollhouse star plays DS Charlie Zailer, who's heading up a murder inquiry after a mother and daughter are found dead in their bath.
She said: "I think Helen Mirren has made playing a detective sergeant almost a rite of passage in an actress's life, rather like playing Lady Macbeth.
"It's something you have to do in order to have a fully rounded career."
She went on: "I haven't really done TV, certainly not in this country, and I hadn't played a detective sergeant, so now's the time."
:: Case Sensitive starts on ITV1 on Monday, May 2.
