Oprah Winfrey on Lamar Odom sadness
Oprah Winfrey has discussed the effect drug abuse had on her family, in the wake of Lamar Odom's hospitalisation.
Oprah Winfrey is devastated that Lamar Odom is fighting for his life, admitting it has made her relive her sister's drug battle.
Former basketball star Lamar is currently in hospital in Las Vegas after he was found unresponsive at a brothel in Nevada on Tuesday (13Oct15). The 35-year-old star had reportedly used cocaine and Viagra-like drugs in the run-up to his hospitalisation and it has been alleged that his organs are shutting down and he has suffered strokes. His ex-wife Khloé Kardashian, who is still believed to be making medical decisions for him, is by his side, along with her mother Kris Jenner and sister Kim Kardashian.
Oprah was in New York on Wednesday (14Oct15) to talk about her new TV project Belief, and she took some time out from promotion to send well wishes to Lamar.
"It reminded me of having to deal with drugs in my own family... It is a battle that you can't win until they decide they want to win.” she told Extra. “In my own family we lost that battle, I put my sister through rehab twice, she came out of rehab and went right back on Oxycontin and there it was, gone, dead. I know how frustrating it is because you want to be able to help, you want to be able to do something.”
Confirmed details are scarce about Lamar's condition at the moment. It's thought Kourtney Kardashian is also at the hospital, with Caitlyn Jenner thought to be on her way. Khloé's brother Rob, who was very close to Lamar during their marriage, has used Twitter to ask fans for their prayers and Lamar's ex-girlfriend and two children are thought to be with him too.
The sportsman was at the Love Ranch Vegas when he was taken ill, with an ambulance called after he was found with a white substance and blood coming from his nose and mouth. He had been at the venue for several days, but according to an insider his visit wasn't about sex.
"He was all freaked out about Khloé, fixated on her," the source told DailyMail.com. "He was showing the girls photos of them together and wanted to pour his heart out, he wasn't there just for sex, he needed a shoulder to cry on, companionship. He seemed lost... He told the girls he was a broken man, that he thought his life was a mess and he had no direction."
Lamar has regularly referred to Khloé as his wife even since their split in 2013, which came after he was accused of being unfaithful and having a drug problem. Even when they were no longer together he insisted they were meant to be together and she would never be able to love another man as she did him.
