Pammie's plea to save seal pups

Pamela Anderson hopes to see the end of seal hunts

Pamela Anderson has criticised the government in her native Canada for trying to challenge the EU ban on seal fur imports.

The former Baywatch star and tireless animal rights campaigner has written an open letter to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on behalf of animal rights organisation Peta, asking them to uphold the ban on importing seal pelts, ahead of the annual spring hunting of baby seals.

Pammie writes: "As a proud Canadian, I'm saddened that Canada is trying to use the WTO to delay the inevitable demise of the cruel commercial seal trade by challenging the EU's ban on seal fur imports.

"I became active in animal issues well before my Baywatch years and am now honorary director of Peta.

"I hope to hear that you will uphold the ban so that my beautiful Canada will finally leave this barbaric practice in the past."

The former Dancing On Ice contestant has done a lot of work with Peta, including stripping naked for the organisation and speaking at the Oxford Union about the "cruelty" of eating meat .

The WTO's public hearing on the EU ban begins in Geneva on February 18.
