Paul Nicholls trapped in rock pool for three days after waterfall plunge
Paul Nicholls is "lucky to be alive" after a fall from a Thai waterfall left him trapped in a rock pool with a broken leg.
Former EastEnders star Paul Nicholls has been hospitalised after being trapped in a rock pool in Thailand for three days.
The actor, who became a heartthrob through his role as Joe Wicks in the BBC soap, had been holidaying alone on the island of Koh Samui when he hired a motorbike and rode to the Khun Si falls.
However, things took a turn for the worse when Paul slipped and fell from the top of the falls, landing in a rock pool at the bottom.
Due to the remote nature of the beauty spot, he then stayed there for three days until a Thai local spotted his bike which appeared to have been abandoned. Flagging the vehicle with authorities, it was discovered that Paul had hired the bike, which then sparked a massive search for the actor.
Hours later, rescue teams came across the 38-year-old at the foot of the falls, though he was semi-conscious and struggling with hypothermia and the pain from his busted leg.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper after the dramatic rescue, Paul said: "I am lucky to be alive. I had a phone with me but I fell from such a height into the water it was unretrievable.
"It took such a long time to find me. It's an understatement to say it wasn't a great situation. It wasn't that I was lost. The problem was I couldn't move to get out of there.
"I've got a broken leg and I'm missing a kneecap. It needs complete reconstruction."
The newspaper also reported that Paul had not eaten for three days by the time he was discovered by rescue teams.
He was hooked up to a drip before medics carried him up a steep path to the closest village. After another two hours, Paul finally made it to the Samui International Hospital, where he began his treatment.
