Dancer-turned-TV producer Nigel Lythgoe has said collecting his OBE from the Queen will be the "most exciting and proudest moment" of his life.

The 65-year-old, originally from the Wirral but now based in Los Angeles, started out as a dancer before working as a choreographer and then moving behind the scenes in TV.

He said: "I have had the distinct honour of meeting Her Majesty on a number of occasions over the years, as either performer, director or producer of the Royal Variety Performance. Meeting her this time, however, will be the most exciting and proudest moment of my life."

Lythgoe, who was given the award on the overseas list for services to the performing arts, education and charity, worked at London Weekend Television where he brought shows including Blind Date to TV.

He went in front of the camera as a judge on pioneering talent show Popstars, where his forthright attitude saw him dubbed "Nasty Nigel" before helping create Pop Idol and moving to the United States to work on American Idol.
