Radcliffe: Speculation reassured my fame
Daniel Radcliffe has joked he knew he was famous when he heard people were speculating about his sexuality.
The actor became a star thanks to the Harry Potter franchise and has now moved away from the boy wizard image with films such as Kill Your Darlings and rom-com What If.
He no longer searches his name on the internet but can remember being frustrated the first time he typed it into Google.
“Daniel Radcliffe alcoholic. Daniel Radcliffe gay. Daniel Radcliffe girlfriend,” he listed to British newspaper The Guardian about the search options that appeared. When told the first hit is now "Daniel Radcliffe girlfriend" he perked up.
“Oh great – I’ll take that, as these things go. I’m pleased my girlfriend comes up before alcoholic or gay. When I first did that, I got really annoyed for about half a minute, until I tried a few other people’s names and I found out [gay] comes up after almost everyone if they’re a man, and even some women – Florence Welch had it, and I was like, really?
“If people are speculating about your sexuality, then you’re doing OK [laughs]."
In What If he plays a young man in love with his best girl friend. Unfortunately, his character is completely hopeless when it comes to romance.
“No, I’m a lot better at being direct at things; I’m not good at suppressing that stuff. If I have a crush on a girl she’s going to know about it," he replied when asked if he's anything like What If's Wallace.
The lucky lady in 25-year-old Daniel's life is actress Erin Darke. Her love of ice hockey is among the things that won him over.
“She’s an obsessive Detroit Red Wings fan – when your girlfriend can talk sh*t about sports better than the men she’s doing that with, that’s pretty sexy," he grinned.
