Rafe Spall: Acting is an affliction

Rafe Spall is writing a high-concept comedy movie, which he'll star in alongside his dad Timothy.

The British actor followed in his own father's footsteps when it came to career choice, trailing legendary star Timothy Spall into a thespian lifestyle.

Likewise, if his children Lena and Rex, who he has with actress-wife Elize du Toit, wanted to join them, he'd support it.

"Acting is an affliction, not a choice. And if you have no choice, then I'd really have to support it whatever," Rafe told British newspaper Metro. "There's a lot of wildly fun things about it, but you have to have a certain fortitude. There's the constant rejection but also the constant change. It's a gypsy lifestyle, but it's also a rich and varied life."

Currently Rafe can be seen in maths drama X+Y opposite Asa Butterfield, Sally Hawkins and Eddie Marsan.

He's also in the process of writing a movie, which is in development with the British Film Institute.

"It's a comedy, and I would never say that it is in the same league as films like Groundhog Day and Big - because they are two of my favourite movies of all time - but it's a kind of high-concept comedy movie in that vein," he revealed.

"There is nothing more questionable than a human being who says they are going to write, direct and star in a movie. It says a lot about somebody - 100 per cent negative things. But I am going to do it and my dad is going to be in the film and the gorgeous Sally Hawkins is going to be in it too."
