Rhys is Sherlock's big brother

Rhys Ifans has been cast as Sherlock Holmes' older brother in drama series Elementary.

The CBS alternative to BBC's Sherlock has brought in Rhys for the recurring role as Mycroft Holmes, said Deadline.

Rhys is set to make his Elementary debut in the first episode of the second series which will be filmed on location in London.

Elementary's Sherlock is Jonny Lee Miller who played alternating Frankenstein roles with Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch in Danny Boyle's 2011 play of the Mary Shelley classic.

In the episode that introduces Rhys as Mycroft, Sherlock is called back to London to visit an old case and has to stay in his brother's new home, 221b Baker Street.

The brothers had a big falling out years earlier and with Joan (played by Lucy Liu) in the middle they are forced to face their complicated problems.

Rhys is set to star alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Serena later this year and will appear in Madame Bovary next year.
