Richard Madden: Red carpets suck

Richard Madden says the "red carpet stuff" is the worst bit about being an actor.

The actor enjoyed a role in the hugely popular Game of Thrones until his shocking departure in 2013.

Now he's got more time for movies, appearing as Prince Charming in Cinderella, which has Lily James in the title role.

But while he loves the job, there are some parts he finds harder than others.

"I hate all the red carpet stuff," he sighed to Nylon magazine. "It's weird, because it's part of what's expected of you now. I'm an actor. That's my job. But actually no, this has got to be part of my profession. You just suck it up and try to make it as painless as possible."

When he has time off, Richard alternates between getting fit if he has a part coming up and "getting fat and drinking beer" if he doesn't.

Another difficult part of the star's job is playing a character who gets killed off. When that happened for the first time in UK miniseries Birdsong, his mother was beside herself.

"It's f**king heartbreaking," he admitted.

"I don't think my mum and dad - particularly my mum - can ever separate it as if it's not me. It's always me."

While Cinderella shouldn't be quite as distressing to watch, his co-star Lily recently revealed her huge princess gown caused some problems on set.

“I had such tantrums about the blue dress - it had a life of its own. Richard had to lift me during the dance and the dress made me four times heavier - I think you can see the strain in the film," she smiled.
