Rob Lowe: Liberace invented bling

Behind the Candelabra star Rob Lowe views legendary late musician Liberace as the godfather of bling.
The actor appears alongside Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in Behind the Candelabra, which is about Liberace's six-year romance with his younger lover Scott Thorson. Rob depicts Dr. Jack Startz in the scintillating biopic.
Liberace was a flamboyant performer known for his love of all things flashy and beautiful.
Rob thinks the departed star should be lauded for his contribution to entertainment and style more often.
“There are people who don’t remember him at all, and there are people who absolutely realise he invented bling,” Rob told Entertainment Weekly.
“When my kids ask about him, I say, ‘He invented bling.’ Like the rappers of today wouldn’t be wearing or doing anything of what they’re doing without Liberace first.”
Rob, 49, wasn’t even born yet when Liberace was at his heyday in the 1950s.
Despite this he still has a fond personal connection to the performer.
“But I’m sort of in the middle where I sort of knew about him and sort of didn’t,” Rob explained.
“Honestly, my connection to Liberace was when Bugs Bunny would imitate Liberace in the Warner Brothers cartoons. He’d have the candelabra and he would play and he would turn to the camera and go, ‘I wish my brother George were here.’”
Behind the Candelabra recently debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in France.
