Rock ‘battles with ex over custody’
Chris Rock could be hoping to reduce his spousal support payments according to divorce papers obtained by TMZ.
The comedian filed for divorce from Malaak Compton-Rock on Sunday after 18 years of marriage. And in his divorce documents, the 49-year-old has claimed that his former spouse has been stopping him from seeing daughters Lola, 12 and Zahra, ten on a regular basis. He is asking for shared legal and physical custody of his offspring.
The news comes after a source told People magazine that the separation wasn’t a snap decision on either person’s side.
“This was a long time coming. Chris has known it wasn't salvageable for a while,” they told the publication. “He was the one to file because he knew it was time to just move forward already."
The documents obtained by TMZ back up this theory, with Chris stating back in November they had identified all the community property to be split up once they divorce.
He claims the pre-nup they signed before their wedding in 1996 is no longer valid, because of the length of time that their union lasted.
He also added that Malaak has the "ability to work and contribute to her own support" which could hint that he is hoping to reduce the amount of spousal support he has to pay.
While Chris issued a short statement confirming the divorce and asking for privacy, his 45-year-old ex’s statement revealed a lot more about the situation.
“Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life's blessings, even when faced with difficulties,” she said. "While recognising that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority. It is in this spirit that I sincerely ask that their privacy and the privacy of our family be respected during this transition in our lives."
