Rupert Grint: Fame overwhelms me

Rupert Grint can’t take being famous because he is terribly shy

The 25-year-old British actor rose to international fame starring as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films.

Although he appreciates his professional success, he could do without his celebrity.

“I’m quite a shy person and wherever you go there’s someone taking a picture of you,” the actor told FHM magazine.

“Sometimes it’s a bit overpowering. You can’t just be yourself, you’re always on show. It puts me on edge.”

Rupert loves going out to have a good time, but admits his recognisable face has put a damper on his social life.

The redheaded star claims that to go unnoticed he often has to conceal his identity entirely when he goes out in public.

“I’ve been to a couple of music festivals in the past few years and that’s quite tough because there’s a huge amount of drunk people. Once one person comes over, it attracts a crowd,” he explained.

“I do hide away from it and wear hoods and masks.”

Rupert admits that his disguise strategy sometimes backfires, but he thinks the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

“I wore a mask at V Festival two years ago and it was invigorating — I felt free,” he recalled.

“But it was a latex duck mask and it was really hot, so I couldn’t keep it on for long.”

Rupert’s next film project is dramatically different from his wizarding persona as he will play rocker Cheetah Chrome in historical drama CBGB. The film steals its title from the famous New York City punk rock club that saw legendary punk rock and new wave bands play on its stage in the 1980s.
