Russell Brand: An egomaniac, but very funny too
Thursday, 12 November 2009
Russell Brand returned to Belfast as he rounds off his Scandalous tour and though you would think enough time has passed to ensure we are all well and truly over Sachsgate (one year, according to him), then think again.
Brand got enough material out of the whole affair to fill up half his set and though it pains me to say it, it was actually hilarious. He laughs in the face of the media frenzy surrounding the whole episode and reminds us that it was just a silly affair blown out of all proportion.
Brand's ego is bigger than the Odyssey itself and much of his show was all about him.
At one stage he flashes images and footage of himself on the Ten O'Clock News and declares “I am the news!” while jumping up and down fantastically.
Like him or love him, though, his delivery and performance was high-energy, highly entertaining and flawless. He knows who his audience is and with his constant groin-thrusting and propositioning it wasn’t so much sexual innuendo but a sexual “come and get me now”. The audience loved it.
I think he may have found himself another fan.

Absolutely Fabulous. I saw the gig in the Waterfront earlier in the year and the material last nite was as funny, if not more so! He knows exactly how to play his audience!

I was at the O2 gig in April, when the Sachsgate thing was still fairly recent I got the DVD of that gig yesterday. I grinned from ear to ear all the way through it it was truly glorious and irresistible. Great stage performer. Yep he milked Sachsgate for all it was worth but why not, plenty of other people did (including our government). Its wonderful to hear it from his angle............
