Russell Tovey lands US TV role

Russell Tovey has landed his first big US TV role in gay-themed dramedy Looking.

The Being Human actor will play Kevin, a gay character and video game wunderkind who made a fortune at a young age and is a close friend of lead character Patrick, played by Jonathan Groff, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Looking will be set in San Francisco and follows Patrick and his two friends, played by Frankie J Alvarez and Murray Bartlett, as they look for love.

Russell, who is openly gay, has not played a gay character before and recently told The Independent: "Every character I play is straight, which is unique, my agent says, because it's not really been done before that someone who is completely out is able to play straight roles.

"So for me to play gay it has to be something special, because it might actually be more of a risk. So I'm waiting for that role - I want it to be something that moves things forward."

Looking is an eight-episode series for HBO and will begin shooting in San Francisco in the coming weeks.
