Ryan Reynolds: My baby is called James

Ryan Reynolds insists his daughter's name is no surprise as everyone already knows it.

The star and his wife Blake Lively became parents to a baby girl in December, although they have kept details about her private. Even her name has been a hotly debated topic, with the 38-year-old actor now admitting that some of the rumours were right.

"It's Butternut Summer Squash," he laughed on the Today show. "No, it's out there. It's James. Everyone knows, and I told everyone who would listen before it was out there that I didn't want to be the first guy screaming it out to the media because, as we know, little girls turn into teenage girls and little teenage girls sometimes scan through the archives and go, 'Why did you do that?'"

Initially it was thought the baby was called Violet after someone purporting to work at the hospital where Blake, 27, gave birth tweeted a message.

Ryan quickly shot that down, although he subsequently admitted the name would be leaked pretty soon as he couldn't stop gushing about the tot.

"I threw out the idea of just never naming the kid to be totally original, but we have a name. I just don't want to say it in, like, a media context. I tell everyone who I meet, so it'll come out," he told David Letterman.

Although the couple want to shield their baby from publicity as much as they can, Ryan has been happy to open up about becoming a father. He's had to get used to being bleary-eyed because he doesn't get much sleep and worries about becoming the dad of a teenage girl. Most of all though he's been astounded by how much loves he feels for his little girl.

“I used to say to [Blake], ‘I would take a bullet for you. I could never love anything as much as I love you.’ And the second I looked in that baby’s eyes, I knew in that exact moment that if we were ever under attack, I would use my wife as a human shield to protect that baby,” he said last month.

“I’m not one for vomiting declarations of sentiment out across the airwaves, but when we had that baby, I fell more in love with my wife than I’d ever been in my entire life. I couldn't even believe it."
