Salma Hayek: Car crash won me role
Salma Hayek has opened up about the worst audition she's ever been to.
The 48-year-old star had a traumatic experience before she tried out for a film she really wanted but hasn't named. She was so desperate to get things right that she was practising in her car on the way there, meaning her eyes weren't strictly on the road.
"I was so concentrated on my lines that the light went green and I didn't move and somebody rear ended me really hard. I hit my head, we came out, we started fighting, I said, 'You hit me!' 'Yes, but you were supposed to move.' 'It doesn't matter! You hit me!'" she recalled to US talk show host Jimmy Fallon. "And he started insulting me and it got really ugly, he took off and didn't give me any of his information. I didn't get a chance to look at the plate. So I was humiliated and insulted and bleeding and crying and I got to my audition late."
Salma was terrified she wouldn't be able to show bosses what she was made off, so begged to be allowed to try out. Although they insisted the spot was pretty much filled already, they agreed to give the star a go when she explained what she'd been through.
Although she was thrilled with the chance, everything caught up with Salma and she had an intensely emotional response.
"I was so shaken up and so upset about this day that I started reading and crying and crying, and they said, 'Oh my God, that was brilliant.' And I got the part," she laughed. "I don't think I cried that much when I actually did the role, I think I was much better at the audition, but anyway it ended up being good for me."
