Sarandon: Age is a problem solver

Susan Sarandon thinks people are better equipped to deal with problems as they get older.

The 67-year-old actress has been through a lot in her life, including the breakdown of a marriage and her split from long-term partner Tim Robbins in 2009. She has learnt how to deal with problems and claims that getting older leaves people better equipped when things go wrong.

"You just have to hunker down and keep on getting through. Yes, there are times when you're lying in the foetal position on the couch but a good thing about getting older is that there is a part of you that is able to take a deep breath and think, 'OK, I will get through this and get to the next day and I have to look at this with some kind of perspective because other people have much worse things that are happening to them,'" she told British magazine Hello! "If you crash and burn enough times in your lifetime, you get trained to do it a little bit more easily. Time helps and so does having good girlfriends."

Susan is currently dating Jonathan Bricklin, 36, with the pair also business partners who run a New York City nightspot together. She doesn't like calling him her boyfriend, preferring to use the term 'collaborator' because she finds it "sexier".

Love is another thing Susan feels she's learnt a lot about throughout her life.

"I've learned that you can't protect yourself, you can't plan anything, you can't ever have a definite expectation of how it is going to unfold and the most productive thing you can do about any of it is to surrender yourself to how it all unfolds," she said. "Because it's not what happens to you that counts, but how you deal with it."
