Shailene Woodley ditches coffee for push-ups
Shailene Woodley could drink a cup of coffee and then have a nap.
The actress is currently promoting Insurgent, the action-packed second film in the Divergent franchise.
Creating the feature involved long days on set, which many people would get through with the help of caffeine. But Shailene realised she could no longer rely on the energy booster.
"It didn't wake me up anymore, it was giving me the opposite effect," she explained to BBC Radio 1 host Nick Grimshaw.
"You become immune; I was past the immune part. I can drink a cup of coffee and then I'm like, 'When's nap time?' [Laughs]"
Instead, the 23-year-old and her co-stars decided to try exercising to wake up. Initially it was squats but when Shailene ripped her pants, they decided to switch to push-ups instead.
"We started push-ups because we stopped drinking coffee! We were like, 'How do we wake up - let's pump out some push-ups! It turned into groups of women doing push-ups!"
It wasn't all hard work though - Shailene admits a lot of was down to wires, with the actors being pulled up rather than relying on their biceps. An intense five-minute running scene was also filmed over a period of two months.
And despite the risky stunts, the star feels at ease when making an action film.
"You're guaranteed safety because if anything goes wrong someone will get in a lot of trouble, so everyone goes out of their way to make sure you're safe," she laughed. "It's like jumping out a plane and knowing your parachute will open."
Alongside the action, Shailene promised her fans a lot of "emotional" scenes in Insurgent.
