Sir Ian McKellen: Getting old has its benefits
Sir Ian McKellen thinks it's going "a bit far" when pregnant ladies offer him a seat on the tube.
The Lord of the Rings actor turned 75 in May and is fully embracing his life. Known for his infectious spirit and good nature, he's even enjoying some of the perks of being older.
"Each age has its benefits. I quite like it when I’m on the tube and people offer me their seat. Sometimes I take it," he smiled to esquire.co.uk.
"The other day I was offered a seat by a pregnant lady. I thought, 'That’s going a bit far.'"
If he could impart any wisdom on the youth of today, Ian would warn them to enjoy being fit and healthy, as it won't last. He also had some advice for his younger self regarding his sexuality.
"When I was 25, I wish I’d know how easy it is to be out. I think my life started when I was 49," he admitted.
"It was like discovering religion and being born again. The person who encouraged me to do so was Armistead Maupin, author of Tales of the City. It was the best advice I've ever had, for my life and my career."
Another thing the star has realised since he's grown older is how much he likes to sleep. He also reasons that some relationships improve with age, although he doesn't think he's any better at them than he used to be.
Alongside his continuing acting career, Ian runs a pub - but it's not all it cracked up to be.
"My favourite alcoholic drink is red wine, but at the moment I’m not drinking. I’m part-owner of a pub so I shouldn’t be saying that," he laughed.
"When you own your own pub you quickly learn not to buy a second pub. It’s a big bother and it doesn’t make you any money. You do it for the fun of it."
