Soderbergh didn't want to compete

Steven Soderbergh's Liberace film will compete at Cannes

Steven Soderbergh has revealed he didn't want to compete for the prestigious Palme d'Or award because he wanted to have fun at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

The director's film Behind The Candelabra starring Michael Douglas as the flamboyant pianist Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover, Scott Thorson, will now screen as one of the 20 films in competition at the festival

Soderbergh initially declined a spot in competition, preferring to leave a space for a young filmmaker in need of exposure. But festival chief Thierry Fremaux called him a week before announcing the line-up and said that, having seen everything, Behind The Candelabra deserved to be in competition.

"The prism through which a movie is viewed when it's in competition is very different than when it's not in competition," said Soderbergh.

"And I wanted to have fun. I didn't want to feel that pressure. But I don't really care now. I'm going to have fun no matter what, I've decided."
