Somerhalder: My fans rock

Ian Somerhalder gushed on Twitter about the good he’s been able to do through his foundation, thanks to the help of his many fans.

The Vampire Diaries star founded the Ian Somerhalder Foundation in 2010 to "empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures", according to its website.

The charity recently received funding to help save at-risk animals.

And in a post on his Twitter account Wednesday, the star admitted he’s overwhelmed reading the series of success stories posted on the ISF website, revealing just how much good the money has done.

“Just looking @ these again-wow,” he wrote “@IS_Foundation Medical Emergency Grant success stories frickin rule,” he added, asking fans to follow the organisation’s account for updates.

Ian credits Twitter and other online outlets with helping him to spread the word about ISF’s efforts. But he admits it’s also his many fans who help propel his messages across the internet. And he couldn’t go without thanking them.

“I’m really and truly so grateful for you all. Social media has brought us the ability do so much... Whoa- it's bada*s.You rock. Seriously,” he gushed.

Ian revealed last year saving animals and the environment are his biggest passions.

"I've already collected more than $6 million in donations to build a new animal shelter," he told German magazine Bravo.

“It's so important to mobilise people, because they are our future."
