Star Wars: The Force Awakens has officially become the UK's most successful film of all time.

The sci-fi blockbuster has now taken £114.0 million at cinemas across the country, according to figures from the British Film Institute (BFI).

This is almost £3 million more than the previous record-holder, Titanic.

In its rocket to the top of the charts, The Force Awakens has also beaten Skyfall (£107.8 million), Avatar (£105.6 million) and Spectre (£94.7 million).

All these figures are adjusted for inflation to ensure a like-for-like comparison.

But while Star Wars occupies the number one spot in UK box office history, it is no longer at the top of the weekly chart.

Oscar-nominated epic The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is currently proving more popular with cinemagoers. The film took a total of £5.2 million between January 15-17 - £2.1 million more than The Force Awakens managed over the same period.

There are three Star Wars entries in the list of the UK's top 20 biggest films: The Force Awakens (first), The Phantom Menace (11th) and the original Star Wars (16th).

The BFI holds UK box office information from 1975 and comparable figures are not available before this date.

Gone With The Wind is estimated by the BFI to hold the record for the greatest number of UK cinema admissions, totalling around 35 million since 1940.
