Stars raise £6m for cancer research

Alan Carr was one of the presenters of the show

Some of the biggest stars from the world of entertainment came together last night to help raise more than £6 million for cancer research.

Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK teamed up for Stand Up To Cancer to urge the nation to dig deep in a bid to move closer to the day when all cancers are cured.

The total on the night stood at £6,483,995 after hosts Alan Carr, Davina McCall and Dr Christian Jessen regularly made pleas for donations in between appearances from both Hollywood stars and famous British faces.

Viewers were treated to performances by pop stars Cheryl Cole and Leona Lewis, with the Girls Aloud singer demonstrating the perils of live television when her microphone failed during her rendition of Call My Name.

The star was given a big hug by McCall afterwards, and a Channel 4 spokesman said: "Unfortunately, with the nature of live TV, you sometimes have glitches and this was the case with Cheryl's mic in the opening number and was rectified as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, comedian Micky Flanagan sat down to an interview with Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards with a selection of questions scrawled on beer mats.

McCall hosted a celebrity-filled version of the Million Pound Drop, welcoming contestants as diverse as chef Heston Blumenthal, funnyman Jack Whitehall and chat show host Jonathan Ross.

International model Heidi Klum made an appearance to show how trendy the Stand Up To Cancer T-shirt can be, as fashion guru Gok Wan looked on approvingly.

Boardwalk Empire actor Stephen Graham was the surprise dance talent of the night as he broke into a breakdance during a dance-off between celebrities and professional dancers.

Magic fans were treated to Derren Brown performing a Russian roulette-style trick with comedian Chris O'Dowd and his wife, Dawn Porter - with both escaping unscathed.

This should be a time of enjoyment. Leave your list of chores at home. You can always attend to these jobs at another time. If you have a chance to show your creative work to a publisher, manager or agent, go ahead. This is also a great opportunity to go on job interviews, auditions and first dates.More
