Steve Carell leaves The Office

Steve Carell is leaving the hit US version of TV comedy The Office

Scranton branch manager Michael Scott has left The Office, as promised, in a fond farewell for the actor who played him, series star Steve Carell.

Carell is leaving the NBC comedy after seven seasons to concentrate on films.

But his character leaves the Dunder Mifflin paper supply company after 19 years, bound for Colorado with his fiancee, Holly.

In the latest episode, the show's full cast of office workers were emotional at Michael's departure. This included Michael's replacement, played by guest star Will Ferrell in a four-episode story.

NBC has not announced who will permanently replace Carell in the series, which comically depicts office life in a documentary film style.

The Office has been commissioned for a new series.
