The actor's sombre post emerged as other celebrities praised their mums and partners on social media.

Comedian Steve Carell is mourning the death of his beloved mum following her death on the eve of America's Mother's Day (08May16).

As families across the U.S. celebrated the annual holiday, the Foxcatcher star took to Twitter.com to honour former nurse Harriet, revealing the 90-year-old passed away on Saturday (07May16).

"Harriet Theresa Carell October 15, 1925- May 7, 2016," the 53-year-old wrote. "Love You Mom".

The sombre message came amid a flurry of posts from fellow celebrities as they marked the special day on social media.

It was also a particularly poignant day for her former FABLife talk show co-host and fellow new mum Chrissy Teigen, whose husband, singer John Legend, heaped praise on the beauty as he showed off a new picture of their daughter Luna on Instagram.

"To my wonderful wife, @chrissyteigen," he began. "Luna and I are so lucky to have you in our lives. If our daughter can be even half as awesome as you, I will be so happy and proud. Happy 1st Mother's Day!"

"HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to my day to my beautiful wife @katherineheigl !!!!" he shared alongside an image of the flowers he had delivered. "I'll be home Tuesday baby and I'm taking you out on the town !!!! I love you!!!"

Meanwhile, Room star Brie Larson shared the spotlight with her mum, Heather, as she hosted U.S. comedy show Saturday Night Live this weekend (07May16), introducing her parent to the stage during her Mother's Day-themed opening monologue.

Lady Gaga also used the holiday to underline her political allegiance ahead of this year's U.S. presidential election.

"Happy Mother's Day @HillaryClinton," she wrote. "This county (sic) needs a mother and you're it. #HilaryBeOurMama".
