Doctor Who supremo Steven Moffat says the Christmas episode is a "great romp", but warns there's "not a lot of Christmas in it".

The show's writer also spoke about bringing back Alex Kingston, who plays River Song.

Moffat explained: "The big deal is Doctor No 12 (Peter Capaldi) encountering River and vice versa.

"It's strange because they're now the perfect couple."

Fans are still mourning the loss of the Doctor's companion, Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman.

Moffat said: "We've just lost Clara, so I didn't want to go straight into a new companion.

"I brought River Song back in because I thought there was a possibility I'd never write it (Doctor Who) again, so that'd be my goodbye."
