Tim Healy briefly 'died' while hospitalised with mystery illness

Matt Healy's actor father Tim recovered from a serious illness after hearing his music.

Benidorm star Tim Healy "died" and had to be resuscitated when he was struck down by a serious illness last year (16).

The 65-year-old actor was filming episodes of the British holiday resort comedy in Spain last May (16) when he became ill, falling into a coma before recovering enough so he could be transferred to a hospital in Manchester, England.

Benidorm creator Derren Litten has now revealed just how close Tim's brush with death was, saying the actor stopped showing any signs of life before being resuscitated.

Derren told Spanish radio station Cool FM, "They operated on Tim and it didn't go well at all. He died. He flatlined. They had to resuscitate him. He was in intensive care for a month."

The comedian and TV writer explained how he had first found out Tim had been taken ill from the actor's wife Joan.

"I got a phone call from Tim's wife, Joan, at the hotel and she said he was unwell, doubled up in pain and can't move," Derren explained. "I jumped into my car and went down there. He was in a pretty bad way."

With Tim's mystery illness putting him close to death, the Auf Wiedersehen, Pet star's ex-wife, actress and TV star Denise Welch, flew to Spain to be by his bedside.

The actor's condition stabilised and he was later flown back to a hospital nearer his home in Cheshire, England, where he made a full recovery.

Tim has credited son, The 1975 rocker Matt Healy, with aiding his recovery through his band's music.

"She (Denise) said that while I was in a coma she kept playing my son's music to me," he explained. "She had his album on a loop. After a few days I started smiling and then I eventually came round."

Earlier this month (Mar17), Tim returned to the Benidorm set to film the tenth series of the hit ITV comedy, which will air next year (18).
