Tim outbids Helena for Tom's ring

Helena Bonham Carter and partner Tim Burton have taken each other on in a bidding war - to get their hands on one of Sir Tom Jones' rings.

The pair were guests at a music industry bash to honour music business veteran Sir Tom.

The Music Industry Trusts Award event was also raising cash for charity with an auction, which included one of the singer's 18-carat yellow gold rings with 19 diamonds.

Film director Tim was at the event in London to present the It's Not Unusual star's award for his outstanding contribution to the music world.

But he and his film star partner Helena soon became involved in the bidding for the ring when the auction began.

Tim - who directed Tom's cameo appearance in movie hit Mars Attacks! - won the bidding after pledging £10,000 for the trinket.

A statue of John Lennon and Yoko Ono donated by singer Kate Bush fetched £7,500.

Tom was presented with his award in front of an audience of guests who included Sir George Martin, Michael Ball and Rob Brydon.

He performed with fellow Welsh stars Cerys Matthews - with whom he duetted on chart hit Baby It's Cold Outside - and Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones at the event.

Around 1,000 guests attended the charity dinner, now in its 19th year, at London's Grosvenor House Hotel in aid of Nordoff Robbins and the Brit School. Previous recipients of the award have included Peter Gabriel, Sir Elton John, Kylie Minogue and composer John Barry.
