Tina Fey remembers Elaine Stritch
Tina Fey remembers co-star Elaine Stritch as a "tough old bird".
The 89-year-old Broadway veteran became known to a whole legion of new fans after appearing in 30 Rock as Alec Baldwin's characters mother. She passed away on Thursday after a recent bout of ill health and show creator Tina was quick to share her condolences.
"Elaine was a 'tough old bird,' but I suspect she may have been a 'tough old bird' since birth," the comedienne told People magazine. "I loved her voice, her timing, her stories and her natural elegance."
The 44-year-old played Liz Lemon in the hit NBC series which ended in January 2013. Tina not only enjoyed working with Elaine, but she loved her approach to life too.
"One day she was wearing a beautiful butterfly cocktail ring, and when I admired it, she gave it to me on the spot – like an Arab sheik in black pantyhose," she smiled. "I feel very lucky to have worked with her as much as I did."
Despite her success on 30 Rock, Elaine was best known for her work on Broadway in plays and musicals as well as performances on the big screen later in her career such as Monster-in-Law with Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez.
Fellow series co-star Alec also paid tribute to the star, having played her much-harangued son throughout its five year run.
"I'm sure that even God is a bit nervous right now," he wrote on his Twitter page on Thursday. "I love you, Elaine."
The actress, who reportedly dated Marlon Brando while at acting school, had battled stomach cancer recently but her agent revealed it was complicated by her diabetes. She died at her home in Michigan.
