Tina Turner visits 'special' London to watch musical about her life

Singer Tina Turner has said she is "delighted" to be working in London on a new musical about her life.

The star, 77, visited the capital to see a workshop presentation of the production by Stage Entertainment on Friday.

She said: "We have been working on the musical for over a year now and today I am delighted to be able to share our news as we begin the next chapter of our journey.

"It has been wonderful to collaborate with (writer) Katori (Hall) and (director) Phyllida (Lloyd) and to have my story nurtured by such an amazing creative team is thrilling.

"London has always had a very special place in my heart and it's wonderful to be back."

According to the Mirror, the Proud Mary cover singer signed a deal with Dutch theatre producer Joop van den Ende to bring a musical about her life to the West End in 2018.

In a career spanning around 60 years, the American-Swiss singer and actor has won eight Grammy Awards and has a star on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St Louis Walk of Fame.

Her autobiography, I, Tina, was turned into the 1993 film What's Love Got To Do With It, dramatising the mother-of-two's famously turbulent relationship with Ike Turner.

Group creative director at Stage, Tali Pelman, said: "It's been an honour for us all to collaborate so closely with Tina Turner on this project.

"Tina is a music legend and her iconic songs are matched only by the power and inspiration of her remarkable and moving story.

"It's been exciting today to see the project move into its next phase."
