Jenson Button was praised not just for his driving skills, but also his “dry wit” as viewers called for him to replace the much criticised Chris Evans.

Jenson Button's guest appearance was such a hit Top Gear fans have called for the Formula One driver to replace host Chris Evans.

The 2009 F1 champion was praised for not just his driving skills, but also his “dry wit” as he joined Chris in testing out a McLaren 675 LT supercar on Sunday’s (05Jun16) episode.

While the 36-year-old McLaren driver began the segment on the second episode as the passenger, it wasn't long before he swapped places with Chris, showing the Radio 2 host exactly how to handle the supercar.

As well as impressing with his driving skills, viewers were taken with his easy onscreen performance, and by the end of the show were calling for him to take over from Chris who has had a difficult start as host of the revamped motoring show.

The flame-haired presenter has been dubbed "shouty" and "annoying" following the first episode as host of Top Gear since taking over from old stalwart Jeremy Clarkson.

Viewers took to Twitter to voice their opinions, with one user writing: “Jenson Button should retire at the end of 2016 and present Top Gear. He's got that dry wit that (Matt) Le Blanc (sic) has and Evans painfully hasn't.”

While another posted: "Replacing Chris Evans with Jenson Button would make #TopGear a million times better.." Another added: “We all know Jenson Button was a much better driver than Chris Evans. Turns out he’s a much better presenter too. #topgear”

Chris was also joined by F1 tycoon Eddie Jordan and co-host Matt in South Africa for a group challenge with musicians Tinie Tempah, Texas singer Sharleen Spiteri and American folk star Seasick Steve in a race to Africa's highest pub.

The group raced in three off-road vehicles - a Jaguar F-Pace, a Porsche Macan and a Mercedes GLC with the winning musician performing at the venue.

Tinie and Matt won the challenge meaning the losing teams were forced to wash dishes and serve drinks at the bar as their penalty.
