John Travolta and Kelly Preston have been married for the pas 24 years, but the actor admits maintaining a happy relationship is a “lot of hard work”.

The 61-year-old actor married Kelly Preston in 1991. The pair have gone through some incredibly difficult times, most notably the loss of their son Jett in 2009, but are still very much in love.

Speaking about the secrets behind a happy union, John told US TV show Extra: “It’s a lot of hard work, but we do it, and we adore our children and we are having a good time with the whole thing, so I’m happy with the results of our marriage.

“It’s been a great, interesting run, you know, here with the how-to, how to navigate through bringing up children and how to navigate through marriage, and there’s definitely an art to it.”

John and Kelly have a host of celebrity friends including Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Last month, John hit headlines when he attended a dinner party alongside Lady Gaga, James Brolin, Barbra Streisand and television boss Ryan Murphy.

But John told Extra that it was him that initiated the star-studded evening of entertainment.

“I called Barbra and said, ‘Lady Gaga is next door on her American Horror Story… I met her, she's lovely, I really think you should meet her, she’s a visionary like you’,” John said.

“So I set up a dinner, and Ryan Murphy came as well. And we just had a great time, exchanging ideas and feelings about life, and it went about six hours.”

One of the topics of conversation at the meal was a remake of hit 1962 movie musical Gypsy.

Rumours about a new version have been rife for the past few years, with Barbra tipped for one of the lead roles, and John said he is in line for another part.

“Well, yeah, I mean Barbra wanting to do Gypsy for years, and she’s been developing it, and I think she always visualised Gaga as Louise and maybe me as Herbie,” John said.
