Tributes for Peter O'Toole

Celebrities have shared their tributes to the late veteran actor Peter O'Toole.

The veteran actor passed away at the Wellington hospital in London on Saturday aged 81 following a long illness.

He shot to fame after starring in 1962 Oscar-winning movie Lawrence of Arabia and holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations without a win.

Sharing his respect for Peter, Samuel posted a heart-warming tribute on his Twitter page.

"I met Peter O'Toole backstage at A Soldiers Play! Amazing talent, an Inspiration! RIP," he wrote.

British actor Tom Hiddleston also left a tribute for Peter, tweeting: "Goodbye, Peter O'Toole. You were great."

Joan Collins, 80, recalled a humorous moment she shared with the legendary star when they had drinks on a plane.

"We've lost a true talent of British stage and cinema - Peter O'Toole. Learned all about mixology from him on a...barely...memorable flight! (sic)" she wrote.

Other celebrities who offered their respects included 27-year-old actress Emily VanCamp. The blonde actress, known for her role in TV series Revenge, sent her thoughts to his relatives at this difficult time.

"RIP Peter O'Toole. Another great man and talent has left us. Love to his family and friends," she shared.

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres feels privileged to have met Peter face to face before his passing.

"Hollywood lost an icon yesterday. Peter O'Toole was one of the best. I'm so glad I got to meet him," she tweeted.

Peter's daughter Kate O'Toole released an emotional statement following her father's passing. She thanked fans and loved ones for their support and requested people leave her family in peace while they come to terms with the news.

"His family are very appreciative and completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of real love and affection being expressed towards him, and to us, during this unhappy time. Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts," she said.

"In due course there will be a memorial filled with song and good cheer, as he would have wished. We will be happy to speak to you all then but in the meantime if you could give Peter O'Toole the respect he deserves and allow us to grieve privately we'd appreciate it. Thank you all again for your beautiful tributes - keep them coming."
