Urban: Toes get stepped on in Idol

Randy Jackson and Keith Urban are on the American Idol judging panel this season

Keith Urban has revealed that tempers did flare on set during the new season of American Idol.

The 45-year-old country singer, who sits between new judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj on the panel, admitted that tension between the judges is natural.

"First of all, it's four passionate people who really care about the artists," he told People.

"Secondly, it's four people who just got thrown onto a dancefloor without any sort of choreography and were told 'dance together'. So some toes get stepped on - and we're figuring it out."

Randy Jackson, the only judge who has been on American Idol since the first series, said that the panel always has its disagreements.

Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler sat alongside Randy on the 11th season, which was hosted by Ryan Seacrest.

"Listen, since this show started there have been very different, distinct personalities," explained Randy.

"It's always been a very happy, funny, dysfunctional family. Everything is great. We're getting along."

He joked: "Me and Keith and Ryan have been fighting a lot - but that's just today."

The new season of American Idol airs on 5* on January 17.
