Welch blasts 'dangerous' Hopkins

Actress Denise Welch has pledged to stand up to controversial columnist and TV personality Katie Hopkins, saying: "I'll always stick up for the vulnerable people she targets."

Former Coronation Street and Loose Women star Welch told the Sunday Mirror that she had to deal with taunts on Twitter from Hopkins only weeks before suffering her first bout of depression, combined with anxiety, in more than a decade.

Welch, 57, told the newspaper: "She is not just a bully - she is a dangerous woman to have in our society. She is setting the world back 20 years with her comments about mental health.

"It's hard enough to cope with something like a mental health illness without being publicly ridiculed and humiliated by someone with a big audience.

"I don't have the power to stop her - but I'll always stick up for the vulnerable people she targets."

Welch said she is always on a low dose of anti-depressants which helped her deal with her renewed depression and anxiety.

Hopkins has been involved in a series of rows over her comments on a range of subjects from people's weight to the desirability of helping migrants, whom she likened to "cockroaches".
