While my guitar sells for heaps

A borrowed guitar played by George Harrison just as Beatlemania was beginning has been sold at auction for almost half a million dollars (£312,000).

The instrument fetched more than one of Elvis' Las Vegas stage suits, which went for 122,000 dollars (£77,000), and a tank top worn by Madonna, which fetched 25,000 dollars (£16,000).

The Mastersound electric guitar, sold at a two-day rock memorabilia sale in New York, had been played a number of times during gigs in England and the Channel Islands, according to Julien's Auctions.

The Beatle, who died in 2001, had borrowed it from a music shop, Julien's said, and played it in the summer of 1963.
