Whitney Houston's private family funeral will be transmitted live on the internet so thousands of the singer's grieving fans can bid a final farewell.

Some fans had been disappointed to learn that there was no public memorial service planned and that the funeral in the singer's hometown of New Jersey would be a private affair.

But yesterday, Whitney Houston's publicist Kristen Foster announced that the ceremony would be live streamed on the internet so her fans could pay their respects and grieve for the star.

The funeral will be shown on livestream.com/aplive on Saturday as well as being available on some satellite services.

Houston died in Beverly Hills, California, on Saturday at the age of 48. Her body was flown back to New Jersey on Monday.

Houston was born in Newark. The service will be at New Hope Baptist Church, where she sang as a child.

Bobby Brown, the ex-husband of Whitney Houston who many blame for her drug addiction, has been asked to stay away from the singer's funeral, according to reports this week.

For the sake of the couple's 18-year-old daughter, however, family members said that he would not be turned away from the private service at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, USA, on Saturday.

Houston and Brown had a volatile and sometimes violent relationship, with many fans accusing the rapper of introducing her to drugs.

In the last few days, however, friends of Houston have come forward to say that she had experimented with drugs before meeting Brown.

Amid suggestions of tensions between Houston's family and Brown, one relative told the TMZ website that he was not welcome at the funeral.

In response, a spokesman for Brown issued a statement saying: "We are not focused on reports, stories or false reports for that matter."

Brown broke down in tears on stage after learning about Houston's death. It is not clear whether or not he will attend the funeral.

Aretha Franklin, the soul singer and Houston’s godmother, will perform at the star’s funeral, it was announced.

Meanwhile, the LA coroner’s office confirmed that a number of doctors and pharmacists, on both coasts of the United States, who supplied the singer with medication have been subpoenaed for her medical records.
