Will McElderry have opera factor?

Joe McElderry is used to the weekly format of a talent show

Joe McElderry has revealed he may have the edge over his fellow Popstar to Operastar contestants.

The singer has joined a host of celebrities - including Band Aid and Live 8 organiser Midge Ure and Steps singer Claire Richards - to compete for the crown on the ITV1 talent show, and reckons his X Factor experience will help see him through.

"I've already been in that environment of having to learn a song really quickly and then perform it," he said.

"I'm glad because I think having to sing opera is hard enough, but having to sing it in front of so many people makes it even harder."

Meanwhile, Midge is struggling to get his tongue around the complex Italian lyrics during rehearsals for the show, which kicks off on Sunday.

"Maybe I have no capacity to learn the language. I walk about spouting Italian, I've got the phrases, but they're not necessarily in the right order!" he said.

"I'm getting to the point where I'm doing the artistic crumble, I'm folding inside."

Steps star Claire admitted she also got a bit lost for words when she met show mentor, Welsh singing sensation Katherine Jenkins.

"I was so nervous the first day I met Katherine. She asked me to sing one of my songs and I just went all silly, it took me about 10 minutes to pluck up the courage to start!" she said.

"I said I would sing Tragedy and Katherine said she was really hoping I would say that but she didn't want to pressure me."
