Singer Will Young is the second celebrity contestant confirmed to compete in Strictly Come Dancing.

The former Pop Idol winner will face off against former shadow chancellor Ed Balls, who was confirmed on Monday.

The Brit Award winning singer said: " As a fan of Strictly for years, I have always imagined myself on the show, but the timing has not been right... until now!

"Music is my passion and the dancing I have done has always been with a microphone in hand. Now there will be no microphone or band, just me, my partner and the dance floor.

"Strictly is a show with fantastic live music and has an ethos of positivity and growth. I practise these two things every day, and I will try my hardest to be the best dancer possible."

Young, 37, first found fame as the winner of the first Pop Idol competition in 2002 and has since ventured into acting, starring in movie Mrs Henderson Presents, TV drama The Mirror Crack'd From Side To Side, and on stage in Cabaret, for which he received an Olivier award nomination.

Mr Balls has already told Chris Evans on his Radio 2 breakfast show that he is "scared to death" about taking part on the show.

On Monday Young tweeted the words "Ed Balls" shortly after the ex-MP's participation was confirmed.

Earlier today he teased fans with the tweet: "Today is going to be exciting..."

The third contestant confirmed to compete in the ballroom dancing competition will be revealed live on BBC Radio One's Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw on August 10.

Head judge Len Goodman has previously announced the next series of Strictly will be his last and ITV is launching a new big-budget rival to the BBC hit, set to launch in 2017.
