Williams hanged himself, preliminary report shows
Robin Williams was found dead by his assistant, according to a sheriff’s spokesperson.
The beloved comedian was found dead at his home in Tiburon, California just before noon Monday at the age of 63.
During a press conference in San Rafael, California Tuesday morning, Marin County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Keith Boyd confirmed Williams was found “slightly suspended in a seated position” and it appeared that he had hanged himself using a belt.
The officer said Williams also had “acute, superficial transverse” cuts to his wrist and that a pocket knife was found near his body.
Boyd said Williams was last seen by his wife, Susan Schneider, at approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening before she retired to bed in another room of the home. It remains unclear when the star retired that evening.
Williams’ personal assistant became concerned the following morning when the star failed to answer knocks on his door and discovered the actor, Boyd said.
Final cause of death will not be announced until the investigation is completed. That is expected to take several weeks.
Boyd confirmed earlier reports Williams had been recently treated for depression.
It remains unclear if he was under the influence of any substances at the time of his death. Toxicology tests will be conducted.
Williams is survived by his wife and three adult children, whom he shares with ex-wives Valerie Velardi and Marsha Garces.
